When it comes to CMS, there are 2 names that stand out: WordPress and Drupal
Each has its own loyal community, a long list of popular websites that it powers as well as a wide range of features and functionalities. It is a common knowledge that WordPress is easier to use and more popular as compared to Drupal that has a smaller community and a steeper learning curve. But apart from this what really separated the two?
There are following differences between them:
1. Search Engine Optimization: SEO is of utmost importance for the health of your website. If your site does not do well in terms of Page Rankings and Search results then your online presence will suffer badly, as a matter of fact, both WordPress and Drupal are good with SEO. As a fact, Google or any other search engine does not truly care which platform you are using as long as your content is in order and you follow the SEO Norms. However, WordPress is a good choice in terms of SEO. Of course, the WordPress users have a luxury of amazing plugins such as All in one SEO pack and Yoast SEO.
Also, it is important to point out that Drupal is also not inferior when it comes to Search Engines. Yoast SEO, for ex. it is available for Drupal as well. Also, it is unknown for non-users of Drupal but this software comes with an SEO friendly features that WordPress leads in the absence of external plugins for instance, Native links caching is supported by Drupal out of the box whereas WordPress needs additional plugins for caching.
Page caching leads to faster load times and that obviously is a very useful metric to boost your page rank. Thus WordPress is better in SEO than Drupal, due to the number of available plugins.
2. Security: For anything on the internet Security is important. But can never be achieved. Nothing on the internet is 100% safe nor can it ever be. We can only try to achieve a great level of security and same applies to the both - WordPress and Drupal as well as any other similar piece of software. Drupal has over the years earned a reputation for its secure and robust performance. While it has own share of issues, such as numerous SQL ejections vulnerability and the community has been quick to respond and for the most part, Drupal has done well in combating security tracks. WordPress however is not weak in terms of security either. While it is a world known fact that WordPress gets its well-known security tracks and many more security attacks than much other software's. This has more to do with WordPress' popularity and less to do with any potential lack of security practices.
Yet there is less margin for error in the terms of security when using Drupal as compared to WordPress. Simply because of the ridiculously large number of Plugins and themes that are already available for WordPress.
So in terms of security, Drupal is far more better than WordPress.
3. Ability to extend and Customize: Here we will compare the ability to extend and customize. WordPress is backed by a large number of Plugins and themes both free and premium that you can use for extending its functionality and customize. Drupal too is backed by its extensions and modules that can help you extend its functionality. But this number is comparatively smaller than WordPress. This does not mean you cannot customize Drupal. You still can do a lot with it but the learning curve is steeper and you require a lot of efforts when accomplishing something unique with Drupal. Many Drupal sites with many unique features. But for non-developers it is still a way to go while thinking WordPress Vs Drupal. So WordPress is better in Extending and Customizing than Drupal.
4. Content Management and Performance: Both WordPress and Drupal can do a lot in terms of Content Management and Performance. But in user performance and ease of use are the matter of perspective. One software might be usable and familiar to one user but it might not be easy and familiar to another user. There are certain areas where each of these two CMS's can prove its worth. In terms of resources, both are universally supported. Coded mostly in PHP and work well on even lesser powerful servers or shared platform. Of course, installation of additional modules or plugins can cause either of the two CMS to bloat down.
A WordPress installation with 45 plugins is likely to slow down and the same applies to Drupal. But there has been a tendency among Drupal users to rely on lesser modules. This can be attributed to the fact that a Drupal community has a larger number of developers whereas WordPress user base has a very lenient distribution of end users as well. Thus Drupal has a very noticeable downside as compared to WordPress.
Basic tasks such as updating your CMS are more time consuming in Drupal and way easier in WordPress. Also, there are more number of outlets and publications in WordPress so this latest content is another advantage for WordPress. You can learn about WordPress at a faster pace than Drupal. So again WordPress is better in content Management and Performance.
Thus in this explanation, we can say that WordPress is far more better than Drupal.
